Blueway Stays brings together a cosy riverside cabin and a light-filled studio, both set beside the Shannon–Erne Blueway just outside Belturbet. Each space has its own character, but both are shaped around quiet mornings, time on the water and easy evenings in.
Choose the spot that fits how you like to travel, then settle in and use it as your base for fishing, walking, exploring or simply doing very little at all.
Winter along the Shannon–Erne Blueway in Cavan's Lake District has a quieter, more settled feel. The air turns sharper, the river slows to an almost glassy stillness, and the landscape shifts into cool greens, greys and soft browns. Early mornings often bring a low mist over the water, and the short days lend themselves to a slower, calmer pace.
Around us here in Portruan, fields rest, hedgerows thin out and the orchards fall into their winter pause. Indoors, it’s the season for warmth, fires lit early, long coffees and quiet, unhurried time to reset. Whether you’re here for a few peaceful days or a longer stay, winter on the Blueway is about simple comforts and letting the natural rhythm take over. Below, we share a few favourites to make the best of the season.
There’s plenty to explore across Cavan and Fermanagh in the colder months. A short drive brings you to Crom Estate, with woodland paths, lough views and an atmospheric castle ruin. Closer again, the looped walks in Killykeen Forest Park are easy, well-marked and ideal for a quick outing.
For something simple, Turbet Island in Belturbet is a handy, low-effort wander with river views and a bit of local history — perfect if you want fresh air without going far.
If you're in the mood for getting out and about, there are great options nearby. Cavan Burren Park has well-marked trails and wide views, while the Cuilcagh Boardwalk is far quieter in winter and ideal for a longer walk.
For gentler days, the forest trails around Florence Court are close by and easy to explore, and both Cavan town and Enniskillen offer cafés, shops and local makers if you’d prefer to stay indoors.
You don’t have to go far for good food around here. Corleggy Cheese next door is always worth a stop, and local markets in Cavan and Enniskillen are great for picking up bits to enjoy back at the cabin or studio.
For a bite out, The Butler’s Pantry in Enniskillen is solid for pastries and lunch. For dinner, The Olde Post Inn in Cloverhill remains a favourite for thoughtful, well-executed cooking without being overly formal.
Some of the nicest winter moments here are the simplest: a river walk at dusk, a cup of something warm on the jetty or watching the stars on a clear night. Cavan and Fermanagh have remarkably dark skies, so you’ll see far more than you expect.
If you’re here in December, small Christmas markets and community events pop up locally. Nothing huge, just relaxed, friendly and very local. Or keep it simple: stay warm, take it slow and enjoy the peace this time of year brings. Check out our What’s On page for all the latest happenings.
